Feature Walls and Accent Walls

Want to transform a room without repainting the whole house? A feature wall is the fastest way there — a painted accent in a day, or board-and-batten and shiplap with carpentry and finish coordinated as one project.

Feature Walls

Feature wall styles we build.

Most feature-wall projects fall into one of these styles — sometimes combined in the same room:

  • Painted accent walls — a single wall in a bold or contrasting color; the fastest, most affordable feature treatment.
  • Color-drenched rooms — every surface (walls, ceiling, trim, sometimes doors) painted the same color for an immersive, design-forward look.
  • Board and batten — wide vertical boards with narrow vertical battens covering the joints; farmhouse, transitional, and modern-traditional aesthetic.
  • Shiplap accents — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal shiplap on a single wall, fireplace surround, or accent element.
  • Wainscoting — classic wood paneling on the lower portion of a wall, often paired with a contrasting color above.
  • Barn-door accents — sliding barn doors in painted or stained wood as functional architectural features.

Feature Walls

Our feature wall process.

  1. Initial Consultation — In-person walk-through to define the style, scope, and color direction. We look through examples and inspiration together, talk through how each style fits the room, and send a detailed estimate within 24 hours.
  2. Design & Discovery — For board-and-batten, shiplap, and wainscoting, we work from inspiration images you share and develop a custom layout for your specific wall — spacing, board width, height, and trim profile. Revisions until the design is right.
  3. Carpentry & Install — Carpenters we work with install all the wood elements — boards, battens, shiplap, wainscoting, or barn-door tracks — precise, level, and ready for paint.
  4. Prep & Patch — Painters mask off the surrounding space, patch seams, fill nail holes, sand, caulk, and prime — the same prep standard we apply to interior wall work, scaled to the wood detail.
  5. Spray or Brush Finish — Painted-only accent walls finished by brush and roller; board-and-batten, shiplap, and wainscoting typically sprayed for a furniture-grade finish on the wood detail.
  6. Final Clean-Up & Photos — Masking down, surfaces wiped clean, room put back together. We take a few project photos for our portfolio before we leave.

Feature Walls

Painted accent vs. color drenching vs. board and batten.

Which approach is right depends on the room, the budget, and the look you're after. A quick guide based on what we see work best:

  • Painted accent wall — best when you want to highlight a fireplace, headboard wall, or focal point; lowest cost.
  • Color drenching — best for small studies, powder rooms, and bedrooms where you want an enveloping mood; works especially well with deep saturated colors (navy, forest green, burgundy, charcoal).
  • Board and batten — best for entryways, dining rooms, primary bedrooms, and stairwells where you want architectural weight and texture; mid-range cost.
  • Shiplap — best around fireplaces, in coastal- or farmhouse-styled spaces, or as a textural counterpoint to smooth-finished walls.
  • Wainscoting — best in dining rooms, formal entries, and hallways where you want a more traditional, finished look.

Feature Walls

Signs a feature wall would transform the room.

  • Walls feel bland or monotonous — every wall the same color and the room lacks visual interest.
  • A focal point isn't reading — a fireplace, headboard wall, or built-in that should anchor the room but doesn't stand out.
  • The color scheme is dated — early-2000s tans and beiges next to a more current color palette elsewhere in the home.
  • The room lacks drama — large open spaces that feel cold or empty; a darker accent wall warms them up.
  • You're redecorating but not repainting everything — an accent wall lets you refresh a room for a fraction of a full repaint.
  • You want the room to feel bigger or cozier — light accent walls open small rooms; dark accent walls warm large rooms.

“We are so pleased with the interior paint job Anthony and Crew Selvin did at our new place! From the initial consultation to the final walkthrough, communication was excellent every step of the way. The entire team was incredibly kind, professional, and easy to work with. They took all of our opinions and paint choices into consideration prior to starting and made excellent recommendations when it came to the paint finishes for our interior. Even with our high ceilings and tricky corners, they completed the project in just a few days, and the quality of the work exceeded our expectations. When they finished, they left everything spotless—you wouldn't have known they'd been there except for the beautifully painted walls! They turned our gray box into a light, open, and inviting home that we’re so excited to move into. We highly recommend Anthony and Crew Selvin to anyone looking for quality workmanship, great communication, and a team that truly cares about their customers. Thank you for making our new place look amazing!”

FAQ

Common questions about feature walls.

It's any single-wall or single-room treatment that becomes the focal point — a painted accent wall, a color-drenched room (every surface in one color), board-and-batten, shiplap, wainscoting, or a barn-door accent. Sometimes we combine a couple in the same room. The goal is to transform a space without repainting the whole home.

Both. We work with a few trusted carpenters, so board-and-batten, shiplap, wainscoting, and barn-door tracks are installed and finished as one coordinated project — one estimate, one schedule, one point of contact. You're not hiring a carpenter and a painter separately and hoping the handoff goes smoothly.

It depends on the style and scope. A painted accent wall is quick; board-and-batten, shiplap, and wainscoting take longer because they include carpentry, prep and caulking, priming, and a sprayed finish on the wood detail. You'll get a specific timeline in your written estimate before we start.

An accent wall paints one wall in a bold or contrasting color to highlight a focal point. Color drenching takes that same color across every surface — walls, ceiling, trim, sometimes the doors — for an enveloping, design-forward effect. Drenching works especially well in smaller rooms (studies, powder rooms, bedrooms) and with deep, saturated colors like navy, forest green, or charcoal.

Yes — that's how most of our board-and-batten and shiplap projects start. We work from the inspiration images you share and develop a custom layout for your specific wall: board width, spacing, height, and trim profile, with revisions until the design is right before any wood goes up.

Painted-only accent walls are finished by brush and roller, like any wall. Board-and-batten, shiplap, and wainscoting are typically sprayed, which gives the wood detail a smooth, furniture-grade finish that brushing can't match across all those edges and profiles.

Accent walls shine behind a fireplace, headboard, or built-in. Color drenching suits small studies, powder rooms, and bedrooms. Board-and-batten adds weight to entryways, dining rooms, primary bedrooms, and stairwells. Shiplap fits fireplace surrounds and farmhouse-styled spaces, and wainscoting reads best in dining rooms and formal entries. We'll talk through what fits your room at the walk-through.

By scope. A painted accent wall is the most affordable option since it's just paint and about a day's work; board-and-batten, shiplap, and wainscoting cost more because of the carpentry, materials, and spray finish. We price every project after an in-person walk-through and send a detailed, itemized estimate within 24 hours, free.
